Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes or Herpes, is not a serious STD but for some people it might be a bit troublesome. The Herpes Simplex virus from which there exists two types (VHS 1 & 2) is the one that causes Herpes.

Symptoms

General symptoms include burning, itching and blisters that are painful and that can break and turn into wounds. This will also be accompanied by swollen glands in the groin. These symptoms can show up on different places of the body. The most common one is probably are the blisters that show up around the lips and inside the mouth. This is called Herpes Labialis.

If the Herpes is on the sexual organs, it's called Genital Herpes. Men will get the blisters on the scrotum or on top of the sexual organ. Women will get them around around and inside the sexual organ and at the base of the uterus. Herpes can also manifest itself around and inside of the anus and this is something that both men and women may experience.

Herpes Labialis in general will get passed along via kissing or through contact between the mouth and the sexual organ while Genital Herpes will get passed along via sexual acts.

Treatment

Although there is no cure for herpes, some drugs have been effective in reducing the frequency and duration of outbreaks. It might also be a good idea to keep the infected area as clean and as dry as possible during an outbreak. Some people also avoid wearing tight fitting garments to avoid chaffing of the area.

Possible Consequences

If a pregnant woman gets infected with the Herpes virus, there might be a chance that the baby will also get infected during the birth. This can have serious consequences for the baby and that is why pregnant women get tested for herpes before they give birth.

If Herpes is found during the pregnancy, the doctor will decide if  a Cesarean Section should be done. That's why you should notify your doctor or whoever is giving you guidance during birth if you have had Herpes in the past.
